Abstract

806,216. Measuring sounds and like vibrations. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 4, 1956 [Oct. 19, 1955], No. 30313/56. Class 118 (2). Wave energy distribution in a liquid subjected to ultrasonic wave action is determined by placing a thin sheet of material, capable of being permanently deformed by the implosion of cavitation bubbles, in contact with the liquid in the position desired to be investigated, A sheet of foil, for example of lead, tin, aluminium or copper, is held by its edges and immersed in the desired position in the liquid, whereupon pitting occurs in proportion and distribution indicative of the intensity and distribution of the ultrasonic energy. Suitable thickness of various metal foils are suggested, but other materials having similar properties of deformability may be used. A device for holding foils for insertion into a cylindrical container of the kind employed in commercial types of ultrasonic cleaning apparatus comprises a frame of metal wire or rods of appropriate stiffness and resistance to corrosion. Two rings 11 and 13 are spaced as shown by four rods 14, 15, 16 and 17 fixed thereto, as by soldering. A handle 12 is provided. The foil sheets include a bottom horizontal disc 19 having its edges turned over the ring 13, a vertical peripheral sheet 22 also attached by bending its edges, and further interior vertical sheets 26 and 28 secured by their vertical-edges. Any or all of these sheets may be in position for testing. The horizontal distribution of cavitation in the container may be tested at different levels to find the optimum location of articles for cleaning by supporting the ring 13 and foil 19 at any desired elevation. After test a disc 19, for example, may be pitted to appear as shown in Fig. 4. Specification 797,417, [Group XXXIX], is referred to.
