Abstract

806,209. Laminates. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 16, 1955 [Dec. 23, 1954], No. 36202/55. Class 140. Metal-faced laminated sheets suitable for use as structural units for walls and roofs are made by hotpressing metal sheets on to sections successively severed from a longitudinally travelling, elongated mass of fibres formed from molten glass or mineral material in which is incorporated a heat-curable bonding material. Molten slag, rock, or glass from a furnace 10 emerging through orifices in bushings 16 is attenuated by downwardly directed, high-velocity gaseous blasts of steam or air to form fibres 20. The fibres are collected on a perforated endless belt 25 travelling over rollers 27 and suction box 31, and are sprayed from nozzles 28 and 29 with phenol- or urea-formaldehyde resin during and after collection to form a sheet M. The sheet is severed into lengths M<SP>1</SP> by a knife 38, periodically reciprocated in a vertical direction by connecting rod 39 and crank 40, each length M<SP>1</SP> being deposited on to the leading sheet of a succession of metal sheets 45 carried upwardly by an inclined conveyer 46. When the metalfibre assembly has been delivered on to a further conveyer 61, a second metal sheet 65 may, if desired, be laid on the top surface of the fibre sheet before the assembly is pressed between heated dies 70, 71 to form a laminate. The metal layer or layers may be of aluminium in the form of flat or corrugated sheets, thin foil (in which case the product may be flexible), perforated sheet, or wire mesh.
