Class 89(3) The pointed end of a nail projecting on the rear face of a workpiece is bent into a spiral form and is pressed flat against or into the workpiece by a rotatable anvil in a rotatable sleeve mounted for resilient axial displacement with respect to the anvil. In the embodiment described, a plurality of drivers 12 (one of which is shown in Fig. 3) depend from a bar 9 which receives vertical reciprocation from an eccentric drive mechanism. The drivers are guided in a beam 13 which is resiliently connected by springs 17 for vertical displacement with the bar 9. Each nailing operation comprises two strokes of the bar 9, on the first of which the drivers 12 enter sleeves 28 mounted in beam 19 carried by the beam 13 and force the sleeves 28 downwardly against springs 31 so that the pointed lower ends 29 of these sleeves pierce nail receiving holes in the workpiece (not shown in Fig. 3) which is supported on a table 51. When the first stroke is completed the beam 19 is slidably displaced so that sleeves 33, which hold nails fed from a hand or automatic supply arrangement 37, become aligned with the drivers 12 On the second stroke of the bar 9, the drivers enter the sleeves 33 and drive the nails through the workpiece. The pointed ends of the nails emerging from the lower face of the workpiece enter bores 76 of rotation sleeves 69 which are mounted for vertical displacement against springs 68, and within these bores the nails engage vertically stationary anvils 75 rotating with the sleeves 69, the ends of the anvils being provided with inclined surfaces 77, Figs. 10 and 11, which in co-operation with the walls of the bores 76, shape the projecting ends of the nails into spirals a2, Fig. 17, which are forced by the anvils flat against or into the workpiece b. The table 51 is pivoted at 49 for vertical displacement against springs 61, but during the first part of each stroke of the bar 9 is firmly held against such displacement until the piercing sleeves 28, or the nails, have been driven completely into the workpiece, after which the table is released, due to engagement of rollers 44 carried by the beam 13, with a cam 57 which rotates a spline shaft 52 out of supporting engagement with the table 51, to free the table 51 for downward yielding movement.
