Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated compounds, e.g. acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, styrene and vinyl acetate are polymerized in the presence of, as a modifier, a tertiary amine having the general formula: <FORM:0805921/IV (a)/1> in which R and R3 are hydrogen, alkyl or aryl radicals, which may be substituted, and R1 and R2 are alkyl radicals, aryl radicals or, in conjunction, an alicyclic ring, and also a catalyst which does not enter into reaction with the amine under the polymerization conditions, e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile. Amines specified are trimethylamine, triethylamine, tri - n - propylamine, tri - n - butylamine, N - methyl - piperidine, N - ethyl - piperidine, dimethylaniline, N - methyl - diphenylamine, beta - piperido - propionitrile and beta, beta1 - diethylamino-propionitrile, the last two of which may be formed in situ in the polymerizing mixture by reaction of acrylonitrile with piperidine or diethylamine. The process may be used to produce block copolymers by polymerizing a monomer to form a polymer having an amine end-group and then polymerizing in the presence of this polymer a monomer having a higher electron accepting capacity than the first monomer. In an example, methyl methacrylate is polymerized in bulk in the presence of triethylamine and azobisisobutyronitrile and after purification of the resulting polymer acrylonitrile is added thereto and polymerized in the presence of a further quantity of azo-catalyst, thereby producing a block copolymer of acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate.
