Class 146(2) [Also in Group XXII] In a banding machine in which one or a number of main joints is formed by movement of a main die or dies 12, 13 on to the overlapping parts S<SP>1</SP>, S<SP>2</SP> of the band, the die or dies and a supplementary connecting means are operated in sequence by a through stroke of a common operating means in one direction, so that at least one supplementary connection is formed in the overlapping band ends after the main die or dies have been withdrawn. As shown, eccentrics 10, 11, which actuate the dies 12, 13, and cam 20, which raises the electrode plunger 17, against spring 18, on to the band parts where it coacts with fixed electrode 21 to form a spot weld, are driven from main shaft 16. The construction and arrangement of the driving gears, eccentrics 10, 11, and cam 20 is such that in a single through stroke of the operating member and in the correct sequence, die 12 is advanced to lock the band parts, die 13 is advanced to punch longitudinal shouldered incisions in the band parts and sever part 52 by co-operation of blades 13a and 17, the dies are withdrawn, permitting slight relative movement between the band parts so that the incisions engage to form a joint, and plunger 17 is then advanced to form the welded joint, and finally withdrawn from the completed joint.
