Abstract

Linear aromatic polyester are plasticised with phthalate esters in which the respective alcohol residues have the general formula -(CH2.CH2O)x-R and -(CH2CH2O)y-R1, where R and R1 are alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl, tolyl, xylyl, benzyl and tetrahydrofurfuryl radicals, x=0 to 2 and y=1 or 2. The linear aromatic polyesters may be derived by the self-condensation of hydroxy acids, e.g. p-(b -hydroxy-ethoxy) benzoic acid, p-(hydroxy-methyl) benzoic acid and p-(b -hydroxy-ethyl) benzoic acid and by the condensation of glycols and dihydroxy aromatic compounds, e.g. ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, hexamethylene glycol and hydroquinone with dicarboxylic acids, e.g. terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, 1,4 - diphenoxy - benzene - 41,411 - dicarboxylic acid, 1,4 - bis - (phenoxy - methyl) - benzene - 41,411 - dicarboxylic acid, (phenoxy - methyl) - benzene - 4,41 - dicarboxylic acid, phenoxy - benzene - 4,41 - dicarboxylic acid and diphenoxy alkane dicarboxylic acids, or acid derivatives thereof, e.g. amides, acid chlorides and esters. Copolyesters may also be used. Many phthalate esters are specified, examples being dimethoxyethyl phthalate, diethoxyethyl phthalate, dipropoxyethyl phthalate, diphenoxyethyl phthalate and methyl methoxyethyl phthalate. In the examples, an ethylene terephthalate-ethylene isophthalate copolyester is plasticised with (1) dimethoxyethyl phthalate, (2) diethoxyethyl phthalate, (3) di-(diethyleneglycol monoethyl ether) phthalate, (4) dibutoxyethyl phthalate, and (5) and (6) diethoxyethyl phthalate, the products being moulded into films.
