Abstract
<PICT:0805516/III/1> <PICT:0805516/III/2> An inert gas is purified by passing it in succession through activated carbon at between - 60 DEG C. and the liquefaction temperature of the gas, magnesium at between 560 DEG C. and the melting point, a titanium-zirconium alloy at between 950 DEG C. and the melting point, e.g. 1050 DEG C., and a filter. Commercially pure argon (99 per cent) passes, in first purifier 1, through column 7 of activated C in container 6, which is cooled to - 80 DEG C. by mixture 8 of solid CO2 and methylated spirits in vacuum flask 9, to remove CO2, CO organic vapours, and water. The argon from 1 then flows, in second purifier 2, in succession through columns 11 of magnesium turnings at 580 DEG C. in containers 10, to remove N2, CO2, CO, and to decompose water. From 2 the argon passes, in third purifier 3, through column 17 of turnings of a 50/50 Ti/Zr alloy at 1000 DEG C. in alumina tube 16 enclosed in silica tube 15, to remove O2 and N2. The containers 10 and tubes 15, 16 are heated by electric coils 13, 19 and are immersed in fused alumina 14, 20. The argon then passes through borosilicate glass filter 4 to remove solid matter to work chamber 5, where it provides an inert atmosphere, e.g. for crystal growing. Specification 792,038 is referred to.
