Abstract

805,487. Magnetic record apparatus. DAVIES, T. L. April 8, 1957 [Jan. 16, 1956], No. 1370/56. Class 40 (2). Means for selectively stopping a magnetic record tape apparatus at a desired place on the tape comprises the use of pairs of differently spaced embossings M on the tape which cause a stop switch and brakes to be operated when a particular spacing of the embossings is detected by a pair of magnetic selector switches J and K set in spaced relationship according to the place at which it is desired to stop the tape. The said magnetic switches J (fixed) and K (movable) comprise electromagnets having two-pronged armatures, Fig. 4, the main prong of which forms part of a narrow gate through which the tape passes, and the other one contact of a switch in series with the coil of its associated electromagnet. The circuits of the two electromagnets are also connected in series with one another and with a current source, so that when both are operated simultaneously by appropriately spaced embossings M, they are locked on until broken by the operation of a solenoid (not shown) in the external circuit, whereby the main stop switch is also operated. Fig. 5 illustrates the indicator arrangement which facilitates the setting of the movable selector switch K to one of 10 alternative stopping positions. When set to zero, the levers D and E, representing the other halves of the tape gates, engage one another to open the gates, as shown in Fig. 2, and facilitate placing and removal of the tape without accidentally operating the switches.
