Class 39(3) [Also in Groups XIII and XXXVII] A washing machine having a sheathed wire electric resistance heating element 3 in the water compartment of the machine has adjacent the theater 3 a thermostat comprising a phial 5 of expansible fluid connected through a capillary tube 6 to a bellows or diaphragm operating contacts of a switch mounted on the casing of the machine to control the heater. The phial 5 is curved for ready removal from a metal tube 8 which is brazed to the sheath of the heater 3 at a part 9 thereof which is bent upwardly so as to safeguard the machine on undue fall of the water level. The phial 5 passes through the water container wall into a terminal chamber 4 to which is clipped a rubber cap 16 apertured for passage of the tube 6, the supply leads and leads 17 for an indicating lamp connected across the heater and mounted adjacent the switch. The thermostat is adjusted by a rotatable knob acting through gearing to vary the pressure exerted by a spring on the bellows or diaphragm. The heater is circular and is mounted below an oscillator or gyrator 1 of the machine.
