Abstract

805,106. Laminates. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. Jan. 30, 1956 [March 21, 1955], No. 2890/56. Class 140. [Also in Group XVII] Flexible rubber containers are made by bonding a layer of thermoplastic resin to a layer of an adhesive vulcanizable rubber to form a flat laminate, heating two of such laminates to a deformable state, drawing them into two arcuate segments with the rubber surface facing outwardly, placing the two segments in mating, face-to-face relationship so that the resins coalesce at the juncture into a continuous wall and maintaining the segments in drawn shape while cooling them to a temperature at which the thermoplastic layers retain their shape. This assembly may then be inflated with fluid such as air, have pieces of vulcanizable rubberized fabric placed on it and be disposed in a mould having the shape of desired container and the whole vulcanized. Butyl or reclaimed butyl rubber compounded for vulcanization may be used and as thermoplastic resin polyethylene may be used. The lamination may be by a heated press, pinch rolls or a calender or butyl rubber may be formed into a sheet and polyethylene deposited thereon as a surface layer by calendering, or skim coating or polyethylene may be formed into a sheet and butyl rubber calendered thereon. Polyethylene may be sprinkled or dusted on to a butyl rubber layer before lamination with a polyethylene layer. Better bonding of virgin butyl rubber is obtained by either an under-cure or an over-cure. The laminate 10 (Fig. 1) is vulcanized in press 13 and cut or stamped to an oval shape. A metal ring 15 is placed on the thermoplastic surface and the assembly heated. Two such assemblies, with the edges wrapped over the metal ring, are placed on the hinged mould assembly 21 and air is withdrawn through ducts to cause the assemblies to form arcuate shapes, the mould is then closed, bringing the two shapes together, and allowed to cool. The outstanding rim including the metal ring is cut from the container. An outlet is generally left leading from this inner assembly, through which it may be inflated and shaped pieces of corded fabric skim-coated with butyl rubber placed upon it. A pipe-nipple is attached to the outlet and the whole is then placed in a hinged mould, Fig. 8, and vulcanized. A screwed outlet pipe may be fitted into the crude outlet.
