Abstract

805,080. Spiral separators, McNUTT, R. M. April 2, 1957 [April 11, 1956], No. 10746/57. Class 117 A classified for the separation of solid materials into fractions of different specific gravity comprises a spiral ramp having means for imparting to it a reciprocating movement in an axial direction and/or a rotary oscillating movement. In the embodiment described the spiral ramp 11, which is flexible, rests on spiders 4 which extend from central columns 3 to upright members 5 of an outer framework 2 and the spiders are adjustably secured thereto by means of clamps 6 and 7 so that the pitch and transverse inclination of the ramp may be altered. Axial movements are imparted to the central columns by' a vibrator 9 and rotary oscillating movements are imparted to the framework 2 by a mechanical oscillator 12. Side walls 13 and 14 are provided for retaining material on the ramp, the inner wall 14 having openings 15 along its length through which the heavier fraction may be discharged. Slots 16 towards the outer periphery of the ramp allow the lighter fraction to pass into catchment troughs 17. Baffles 22 may be provided on the ramp to aid separation. Instead of central columns there may be a single hollow perforated axial core through which the heavier fraction may pass.
