Abstract
<PICT:0804996/III/1> The invention comprises apparatus for conducting chemical reactions comprising a vertical column containing a heat-exchange means extending across the column and a substantial distance vertically, in the upper portion, and small-sized packing pieces in the lower portion, with inlets and outlets for a fluid heat-exchange medium, an inlet above the packed section for liquid reactant, an inlet for gaseous reactant below the packed section, an outlet for fluid reaction product below the packed zone, and an outlet for gas above the heat-exchange means, a flow-path through the column being provided which is adapted to permit a downward flow of a non-viscous liquid from and through said heat exchange means to the bottom of the packed section without the build-up of a continuous liquid phase. The heat-exchanger may be of spiral tubular form and the packing of glass. In Fig. 1 apparatus as above is designed for the reaction between ethylene and bromine according to Specification 804,995 (Group IV (b)). A cylindrical glass column 1 is divided into a reaction zone 2 containing glass tubular heat-exchangers 7-12 inclusive and a packed zone 3 in two sections 4 and 5 containing glass packing. An inlet line 13 above coil 8 provides for gravity-fed liquid bromine, and inlet line 14 at the bottom of column 1 is for gaseous ethylene. The product, ethylene dibromide, is withdrawn through line 16 to a storage tank. Thermometers, gauges and valves are provided. Vent gas passes through line 15 via a scrubber to atmosphere. Cooling water is supplied to the coils through line 31. Operating data are given and the process may be made automatic.
