In a process according to the parent Specification, which is referred to, the casting is shortened by compression applied during and after pouring. The mould 4 is moved over the pouring nozzle 5 during pouring, by a piston 2, and the casting is further compressed, after pouring is completed, by movement of the piston 12 by means of pistons 9. In a modification, the mould alone is moved, alternatively, the mould is held still and the nozzle 5 moved.
