Abstract

804,616. Sink-float apparatus. TROMP, K. F. Nov. 5, 1956, No. 33677/56. Class 82(2) In apparatus for separating granular material having different specific gravities by means of a suspension comprising a trough 1, a bladed rotor is mounted for coaxial rotation in it so as to just clear the wall thereof, the forward portion of the rotor being surrounded by a shell 7 having slots 9 and blades 10, the rear portion being open, the trough having longitudinal walls 2a and 2b, defining a separating chamber, therein, a shoot 16 to supply run-of-mine coal and perforated pipes 12, 13, 14 and 15 to supply suspension to the chamber, and a shoot 19 for discharging the surface layer of the suspension to gether with the washed coal. The bottom of the trough 1 has an outlet 29 close to its rear wall covered by a sieve 30 just cleared by blades 5 of the rotor. The rotor comprises lantern wheels 8, joined by the perforated blades 5, having studs 3, and supported by rollers 4. Gear wheels 6 meshing with the lantern wheels 8 are driven by means not shown. The forward and rear portions of the rotor are separated by a ring 11 between which and the walls 2a and 2b respectively, are stationary portions which extend to a level just above that (S) of the suspension. A paddle wheel 28 rotates in the same direction as the trough 1 between the wall 18 and the partition 27, only the lower paddies of the wheel being in the bath. The washed coal moves over a weir 21 into the shoot 19. The sinks enter the pockets between the blades 5 and are carried over the plate 22 into the hopper 23. The middlings are swept to the rear of the bath through the opening 2b<SP>1</SP>. The high density suspension causes the high gravity middlings to fall on the sieve 30 to be collected by the blades 5. The medium density suspension causes the low gravity middlings to deposit on a sieve 32 to be collected by the blades 5. The paddle wheel 28 causes the suspension to be drawn through the sieve 32. The blades 5 discharge the middlings into the hopper 24. To add any of the finer fraction of the middlings to the washed coal, the plate 22 is perforated over the hopper 25. Details are also given of methods of recycling the discharged suspension. Specifications 466,964 and 602,534 are referred to.
