Abstract

804,563. Brushes. SPA BRUSHES Ltd., and WILCOCK, E. A. Dec. 11, 1956 [Dec. 29, 1955], No. 37214/55. Class 19. In a method of manufacturing paint and like brushes there is located between the bristles 2 as said bristles are inserted in a ferrule 1 a wedge or wedges 3 which are removed after the roots of the bristles have been secured together and to the ferrule by a suitable cement poured into the ferrule in a sufficient quantity to form a pad 4 on said roots. The removal of the wedge or wedges when the cement has set leaves a space inside the brush that enables the bristles to swell inwards instead of outwards. The wedge or wedges may be set 1/16 inch or more up from the roots of the bristles so that when the brush is finished cement fills part of the gap or gaps formed by the wedge or wedges, which can have open ended slots in one edge for allowing pins 6 to be passed through the brush before removal of the wedge or wedges. The amount of cement used to form the pad 4 may be reduced by locating a filler block of material at the centre of the space to be occupied by the pad.
