Abstract

804,510. Rowing boats. BARNES, F. D. L. June 3, 1957 [June 1, 1956], No. 17053/56. Class 114. The rowlock 28 of a rowing boat is mounted on the outboard end of a structure, e.g. arms 20 ... 23, pivotally mounted as at 24, 25 upon the hull 12 of the boat and coupled by a pivoted link 30 to a stretcher 14 longitudinally slidable in the hull, the force exerted on an aft direction by the feet of the oarsman tending to move the stretcher and rowlock aft and the force in a forward direction to move them forwards. Two pairs of arms 20, 21 and 22, 23 are connected at their outer ends by an arm 26, the rowlock 28 being pivoted on a pin 29 connecting the ends of the arms 20, 21. The stretcher 14 slides on a longitudinally disposed tube 13 and is guided by vertical posts 15 secured to it and straddling a tube 16. The posts carry a transverse tube 17, braced by a strut 18 to the stretcher 14 and supporting footrests 40 to which the feet are strapped. In a cox-less boat, the rudder lines follow the link 30, the arms 22, 23 and the side of the hull and steering is effected by angular movement of a foot on its footrest.
