Abstract
804,235. Liquefaction of gases. GARRETT CORPORATION. March 22, 1957, No. 9427/57. Class 8(2). Hydrogen and oxygen generated at high pressure in a water electrolysis tube 1 are collected separately and are liquefied by expansion with the production of external work. The oxygen at between 2000 and 4000 p.s.i. collected in space 11 is expanded in turbines 47, 48, 49 arranged in series, and a portion of the partially liquefied gas traverses a heat exchanger 18 and serves to cool the hydrogen gas discharged from a space 12 into turbines 19, 20 and 21. The remaining partially liquefied oxygen passes to a storage vessel 56 having its gas space connected to the intake of a blower 62 which discharges through a heat exchanger 60 where the oxygen is liquefied by helium from a cryostat 38. The partially liquefied hydrogen from turbine 21 is collected in a vessel 29 the gas space of which is connected by a duct 31 to a blower 34 discharging into a heat exchanger 32 which is also cooled by helium from the cryostat 38, the resulting liquid hydrogen being returned to the vessel 29.
