Abstract

803,751. Vehicle jacking arrangements. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. Feb. 8, 1955, No. 3723/55. Class 79(3) [Also in Groups XXX and XXXII] A trailer vehicle suspension system (see Group XXXII) includes a pneumatic cushion assembly 15 disposed between the chassis-frame 1 and a member 22 carrying the wheel axles 8, 9. A wire rope tension link 45 cushioned by a rubber buffer 50 is disposed on either side of each cushion assembly 15 at a point midway along its length and is detachable at its lower end. The interior of each cushion assembly is connected by a conduit with an air supply reservoir, Fig. 3 (not shown). A manually operated operable valve is disposed in the conduit either on the trailer vehicle or in the driver's cab on the tractor vehicle, and may be set to connect the cushion assembly 15 with the reservoir, or to atmosphere. Alternatively, it may be set to close the conduit to retain the existing air supply in the cushion assembly. The conduit may also include a pressure gauge between the valve and the interior of the cushion assembly. On disconnecting all the links 45 the pressure gauge gives an indication which is proportional to the load carried by the vehicle and the gauge may be calibrated accordingly. Either end of the member 22 may be secured by a link 70 to the chassis-frame. The wheel adjacent that end of the member 22 may then be lifted off the ground if the cushion assembly is further inflated. Either one wheel, or complete axle, may be lifted by this means, either for the purpose of carrying out repairs or for running on one pair of wheels only. The air supply pressure may be varied to vary the height of the vehicle, for loading and other purposes. Specification 803,752 [Croup XXXII] is referred to.
