Abstract

Flat structures, e.g. glass plates, are printed with a composition comprising a dyestuff or pigment having no affinity for the structure, a hardenable polyepoxide of a hydroxy-compound containing at least two hydroxyl groups and a hardening agent therefor, followed by heating to harden the polyepoxide. Suitable polyepoxides are those obtained by re-acting polyhydric phenols or polyhydric alcohols with epichlorhydrin or glycerine dichlorhydrin. Specified hardening agents are amines such as tris - (dimethylamino - methyl) phenol, triethylene tetramine, diethylene triamine and dimethylamino - propylamine, di - and poly - carboxylic acid anhydrides, complex compounds of boron trifluoride and amines and mixtures of dicarboxylic acid anhydrides with amines such as a mixture of hexahydrophthalic acid anhydride and tris - (dimethylamino - methyl) - phenol. Solvents, e.g. toluene, diacetone alcohol or acetone, may be added to the composition. In examples, the polyepoxide employed is the reaction product of epichlorhydrin with 4,41-dihydroxy - diphenyl - dimethylmethane, or with 4,41-dihydroxy-dimethyl methane, or with ethylene glycol (yielding a polyglycidyl ether), the pigments employed being azo dyes, copper phthalocyanine, titanium dioxide and carbon black. Specification 739,701, [Group IV (a)] is referred to.ALSO:A composition for printing flat structures such as fabrics, films or glass plates comprises a dyestuff or pigment having no affinity for the structure, a hardenable polyepoxide of an hydroxy-compound containing at least two hydroxyl groups and a hardening agent therefor, heat being subsequently applied to the printed structure to harden the polyepoxide. Suitable polyepoxides are those obtained by reacting polyhydric phenols or polyhydric alcohols with epichlorhydrin or glycerine dichlorhydrin. Solvents, e.g. toluene, diacetone alcohol or acetone, may be added to the composition. Fabrics of cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, polyamides, polyesters, polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile copolymers and glass may be printed as also may foils of regenerated cellulose, acetyl cellulose, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene. In examples, the polyepoxide employed is the reaction product of epichlorhydrin with 4,41-dihydroxy-diphenyl-dimethyl-methane, or with 4,41 - dihydroxy - dimethyl methane, or with ethylene glycol (yielding a polyglycidyl ether), the pigments employed being azo dyes, copper phthalocyanine, titanium dioxide and carbon black which may be suspended in hydrogenated colophony glycerine ester.
