Abstract

803,608. Aerials; radio direction finding. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 8, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 762/57. Addition to 772,998. Class 40 (7). Relates to a magnetic direction-finding aerial, Fig. 1, of the type described in the parent Specification, wherein a first pair of two crossed pairs of magnetic antenna elements is provided with highly permeable bars 31 at the extremities to compensate for quadrantal errors due to the presence of adjacent conducting surfaces. In accordance with the invention the other pair of antenna elements is provided at the extremities with conductive shielding members 31<1> which are secured to the elements in a high reluctance fashion. The members 31<1> act as shields against the passage of flux into the antenna elements so as effectively to decrease the sensitivity of the antenna elements, The combination of conductive members 31<1> on one pair of antenna elements with magnetic members 31 on the other pair extends the possible range of compensation. Members 31<1> are constructed as shown in Fig. 2 of a highly conductive material, such as copper, and are secured to the antenna elements as shown in Fig. 4 by a brass screw 36 with the interposition of an insulating member 35 so as to provide a high reluctance separation between the member and antenna element; 33 denotes a coating of plastic material normally provided over the magnetic material forming the antenna. If desired, members 31<1> may be shaped as segments of circles.
