Abstract

An epoxy resin having an epoxide equivalent of between 190 and 375 was heated and mixed with minor proportions of ammonium carbonate, toluene and sorbitan monolaurate polyoxyalkylene derivative and diethylene triamine. The release of carbon dioxide caused the resin to foam. Diazo amino benzene may be used as the blowing agent. For a phenolic foam, the materials were an A-stage phenolic resin, sorbitan monolaurate polyoxyalkylene derivative, sodium bicarbonate and a solution of phenolsulphonic acid. Ammonium carbonate may be substituted for the sodium carbonate.
