Abstract

A filter medium for use in brewing beverages is non-porous until it has been treated with the hot water used in the brewing. The member as used in brewing coffee or tea is rendered non-porous by a thin coating of an edible water soluble agent which dissolves when the hot water is added to the ground coffee beans, the time taken for the dissolution permitting the hot water to begin extracting the soluble constituents of the coffee before filtering commences. The coating may be on one or both surfaces of a filter paper and different materials may be used for them. Sodium carboxymethyl-cellulose, methyl cellulose, starch, glucose, various gums, polyvinyl alcohol and solid paraffin are examples of materials mentioned. Instead of a coating, the surface of a filter paper may be compacted by repeated blows from a hard member to become non-porous until expanded by the hot water treatment. Numerous examples of coffee brewing and one of tea are given. Ground egg-shell or chicory may be added to the coffee to vary its flavour.ALSO:A filter medium for use in brewing beverages is non-porous until it has been treated with the hot water used in the brewing.
