Abstract

803,447. Work handling means for presses. PRESS GUARDS, Ltd. May 13, 1957 [May 12, 1956], No. 14843/56. Class 83 (4). A work-handling device for a power press or the like machine comprises a rigid substantially vertical arm 14 carrying at its lower end work-gripping means 29 and mounted to swing intermediate its ends on a pivot 15 guided for movement along a fixed path 12, the upper end of the arm being connected to an actuating lever 16 pivoted about a fixed point 17 and driven by a fluid-pressure motor 20. The device is secured on the press by a bracket 10; its arm 14 is telescopically adjustable and carries rollers 15 guided in fixed slots 12. The gripping means 29 is slidable along a substantially horizontal bar 26 by means of a double-acting air motor 28. The bar 26 is angularly adjustable on the end of the arm 14 by nuts 37. In operation the air motor 28 advances the gripping means 29 to close it on to a finished workpiece in the press which is then on its upstroke. After a predetermined time delay the motor 20 is energized to first raise the gripping means and workpiece and then swing them clear of the press along paths 31 or 32, Fig. 3 (not shown). A limit switch 40 is then tripped by the arm 14 or by lever 16 and this reverses the air motor 28 to retract the gripping means and release the workpiece and also connects the motor 20 to exhaust whereby the arm returns by gravity to its original position. The arm may be held in its raised position by a bar inserted in a hole 34. The device is timed to operate in synchronism with the press by a limit switch 46, Fig. 3 (not shown), actuated by a cam on the press crank-shaft and controlling the solenoid-actuated control valve of the air motors. Limit switches are also provided for stopping the press if the gripping means is not fully retracted.
