Abstract
Synthetic resin emulsions or solutions for use as adhesives in the production of plywood contain as extenders finely divided extracted lignin and finely divided lignocellulose. Specified resins are phenolplasts and aminoplasts, a preferred phenoplast being made by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in the presence of caustic soda; a preferred aminoplast being made by condensing urea and formalin in the presence of ammonium hydroxide and sodium acetate, the product being distilled under reduced pressure. When phenoplasts are used, the compositions may also contain epoxy resins and aromatic diglycidyl ethers, of which many are specified. The extracted lignin may be obtained as a by-product of wood pulping processes and from lignocellulosic materials by biological or selective solvent action. Specified lignocellulose extenders are walnut, hickory, palm and filbert shells, peach, plum and apricot pit shells, grain and seed hulls and wood flour. Examples 1 to 18 describe the use of the extender compositions with various aqueous phenoplasts in the presence of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate. Examples 19 to 21 describe the use of the extender compositions with aqueous urea-formaldehyde resins whilst the final example describes the preparation of an adhesive composition from walnut shell flour containing an epoxy resin, alkali extracted lignin, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, water and a phenoplast. The examples also describe the preparation of plywood using the adhesive compositions of the invention. U.S.A. Specification 2,507,465 is referred to.ALSO:An extender composition for use in emulsions or solutions of natural protein glues, e.g. those derived from blood, albumen or soybeans, consists of a finely-divided lignocellulose extender and a finely-divided extracted lignin. The extracted lignin may be obtained as a by-product of wood pulping processes or by biological or selective solvent action on lignocellulosic materials. U.S.A. Specification 2,507,465 is referred to.ALSO:An extender composition for use in emulsions or solutions of natural protein glues used in the production of plywood consists of a finely divided lignocellulose extender and a finely divided extracted lignin. Specified protein glues are those prepared from blood, albumen and soybeans. The extracted lignin may be obtained as a by-product of wood pulping processes and from lignocellulosic materials by biological action or by selective solvent action. Specified lignocellulosic extenders are walnut, hickory, palm, filbert, peach, plum and apricot shells, grain and seed hulls, and wood-flour. U.S.A. Specification 2,507,465 is referred to.
