802,158. Laminates; agglutinated fibrous sheet materials. ALGEMEENE KUNSTVEZEL MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 25, 1955 [May 29, 1954], No. 15051/55. Class 140. [Also in Group XIII] An apparatus for producing mineral fibre, e.g. glass fibre, mats impregnated with a binder, e.g. a thermosetting resin such as phenol formaldehyde resin, comprises parallel opposed surfaces 13, 14 between which the mat 10 is passed, the surfaces 13, 14 being spaced apart a distance corresponding to the required mat thickness, and means for forcing hot gaseous fluid between the surfaces 13, 14 in such a manner that the fluid covers a considerable distance inside the mat 10 in a direction parallel to the principal surfaces thereof. The impregnated glass wool mat 10 is drawn between belts 11, 12 of perforated metal or formed of metal trellis, which pass between fixed portions 13, 14. The hot gas is delivered by pipes 15, 16 at each side of the mat 10 and escapes by pipes 17, 18, the gas flowing in the same direction as the mat 10 travels. In a modification, the two inlet pipes are situated at the centre of the apparatus and a pair of outlet pipes are situated at each end, gas thereby flowing both with and against the direction of travel of the mat. In this embodiment, hot or cold gas is passed through the mat in a vertical direction before the mat reaches the first main gas outlet, to drive off excess binder. In both embodiments, suction may be applied to the main gas outlet pipes. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, gas is supplied at one side only of the mat 10<SP>1</SP> at 15<SP>1</SP> and led off at 17<SP>1</SP>, the lower face of the mat 10<SP>1</SP> having formed thereon a layer 30 of covering material, e.g. a sheet of cloth, paper, card or a plastic material which may be advanced through the apparatus on the belt 12<SP>1</SP> for welding by the heat and pressure in the apparatus to the lower face of the mat 10<SP>1</SP>, e.g. for waterproofing, protection or strengthening. The belt 12<SP>1</SP> may be imperforate. In another embodiment, Fig. 9, the gas inlets 43 and outlets 44 are in the lateral walls 41, 40 of the apparatus at each side, to enable a mat 10<SP>11</SP> to have covering material welded to both its principal faces. Hot gases mentioned include superheated steam, inert gases, gaseous combustion products, or, if oxidation need not be avoided, air or oxygen, and the gas may include organic peroxides to accelerate polymerization, or aldehydes which may be in gaseous, liquid or solid particle form or as aerosols or gazeosols.
