Abstract

801,787. Change-speed control. STUDEBAKER-PACKARD CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1956 [Aug. 3, 1955], No. 6146/56. Class 80 (2). A relay switch 106, closure of which opens a solenoid valve 88 to supply pressure fluid 76 to a piston 60 for upshifting an auxiliary two-speed gear on a vehicle, has two similar windings W in branch circuits including switches SW4, SW3 respectively closed by an output-driven governor above a predetermined vehicle speed, and by release of the usual accelerator pedal 34, the windings W being such that both must be energized together to actuate the relay switch 106, which latter then remains actuated by continued energization of either winding alone. Thus, upshift to direct- (or over-) drive requires accelerator release above the predetermined closure speed of the governor switch SW4, whilst return downshift does not occur on decelerating below the governor-switch opening speed unless the accelerator is partly depressed from its full release position to open the switch SW3. Accelerator kickdown shift is possible at any time by opening a kickdown switch SW5 in the common feed of both windings W, such feed also including the usual engine ignition switch SW1, and an upshift lock-out switch SW2. The two-speed planetary gear and its hydraulic control are the same as those in Specification 801,549.
