Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to set the operating speed of a direct-coupled clutch and that of engine brake separately from each other by providing the lockup clutch control valve and an engine brake control valve independent of each other.
CONSTITUTION: A lockup control valve 180 is controlled by No.4 solenoid valve 240. When No.4 solenoid valve 240 is energized, the oil pressure in oil path 59 is delivered to a torque converter 1 via an oil path 333 and as a result the direct- coupled clutch 9 is engaged to lock up. With the gears in a first or second speed, when the car speed and throttle opening are at the preset values, No.5 solenoid valve 280 is energized to activate the engine brake control valve 80. Thus, when the gears are in the first speed, the brake 35 also becomes engaged in addition to the already engaged brake and clutch and with the gears in the second speed, a brake 24 also becomes engaged, thereby attaining the first or second speed where the engine brake operates effectively.
