Abstract

Neutral tetracycline produced by reducing chlortetracycline to tetracycline by means of hydrogen in an inert solvent and adding water to precipitate the tetracycline, is obtained in greater purity by adjusting the pH of the reduced solution to 4.5 to 7.5, and preferably 5.7 to 6.5, and then adding water in the presence of one or more alkali metal sulphites and/or ammonium sulphite. The sulphites are preferably added in solution in the water. pH adjustment is by a mineral acid such as hydrochloric. The quantity of sulphite is 0.9 to 15 per cent, and preferably 5 to 10 per cent, by weight of the tetracycline. The preferred solvents are 1 to 4 carbon alcohols, e.g. methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol, mixtures thereof and mixtures with glycol ethers such as 2-methoxy ethanol and 2-ethoxyethanol. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 747,779.
