Abstract
801,461. Echo distance-measuring. CLEVITE CORPORATION. June 14, 1955 [June 15, 1954], No. 17079/55. Class 118 (2). An underwater pulse-echo system comprises in combination underwater acoustic transducer means for transmitting an abrupt acoustic signal pulse and for receiving signal echoes, a receiver circuit connected to the transducer means to respond to signal echoes received thereby, time variable-gain amplifier means connected to the transducer means and operative to reduce the gain of signal echoes received initially and increase the gain of later-received signal echoes, and a differentiator in the receiver circuit capable of passing abrupt signal echoes and rejecting echoes of slowly changing amplitude. The transmitted pulse 12 produces various reflections from the water surface, from particles in the water, and from the sea bottom. The sum total of these discrete pulses from progressively distant reflections results in a slowly decaying reverberation signal 13 which tends to obscure a target echo such as 14. The differentiating circuit separates the slowly decaying signal 13 and abrupt signal 14 whilst the use of swept gain prevents the initial steep front of the reverberation 13 from producing an output signal.
