Abstract

801,329. Heating liquids in bulk. SHELL RESEARCH, Ltd. June 25, 1957 [July 3, 1956], No. 20584/56. Class 64(3) In a ship's liquid storage tank 13, one or more elongated heating elements 10, 11, 12 are arranged with their longitudinal axes substantially vertical, and each element comprises a continuous length of metal tubing the two ends 1, 2 of which lie at or near the top of the element, one end leading to a coiled section 4 which extends substantially the whole length of the element and the cross-section of the envelope of the coils of which, normal to the longitudinal axis of the element increases from the upper end 5 to the lower end 6 of the element, and a substantially straight section 8 leading from the lower end of the coiled section and through the coils of that section to the other end of the tubing. In the form shown, the coiled and straight sections of the element are joined by a downwardly projecting loop 7 serving as a trap in which steam condensate collects, thus preventing a flow of steam from the coiled section 4 to the straight section 8. The internal bore of the loop 7 and straight section 8 is preferably less than that of the coiled section 4. Longitudinal bracing members such as metal strips or bars (not shown) may be secured to the turns of the coiled section 4 and these members in turn may be secured through other bracing members to the structure of the tank. The elements preferably extend from the bottom of the tank upwardly to a distance less than half the height of the tank and may be made of aluminium brass. Individual elements are withdrawn through suitable manholes provided in the tank. Specification 655,986 is referred to.
