Abstract

A liquid composition, suitable as the oil base of lubricating oil compositions, lubricating greases and hydraulic fluids, comprises one or more esters of di- or poly-carboxylic acids with C4-C17 alcohols and one or more hydrocarbons having a viscosity of 100-500 cs. at 50 DEG C. The esters may be di-esters of glutaric, adipic, azelaic, pimelic, sebacic or pinic acid with 2-ethyl-butanol, 2-ethyl-hexanol or octanol, while the hydrocarbon oils may be petroleum fractions or synthetic materials. Greases may be prepared from the liquid composition by incorporating thickening agents such as sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium or aluminium soaps. Additional ingredients may be incorporated in the liquid composition, particularly antioxidants (e.g. phenols or amines), dispersing agents (e.g. metal salts of organic acids), foam-inhibiting agents (e.g. silicones), anticorrosive agents (e.g. alkali metal or alkaline earth metal alkaryl sulphonates) and film-forming agents (e.g. tricresyl phosphate). In the examples, blends of dioctyl sebacate or adipate with petroleum fractions are described.
