Abstract
800,992. Dynamo-electric machines; transformers and inductors. PLESSEY CO., Ltd. Dec. 23, 1954 [Dec. 24, 1953], No. 35887/53. Classes 35 and 38 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] An electrical component comprises an insulating support of alumina in which a conductor of molybdenum disilicide is embedded, the parts being intimately bonded during a firing process. An elemental field coil for a motor (Fig. 9) comprises a backing layer 40 of molybdenum disilicide and a bonded layer 41 of alumina. A coil 43 of molybdenum disilicide is carried by an alumina support 44 and is provided with terminal spigots 45, 46. Spigot 46 passes through opening 48 in alumina layer 47 to contact the inner end of coil 49 carried by alumina support 50. A terminal spigot 51 projects from this coil which is covered by alumina 52. The layers are formed into an integral mass and the layer 40 can be braized to a support. A series of such coils can be assembled in slightly overlapping relation to form an annulus, appropriate connections being made between the terminal spigots. Each coil can be formed with a central recess for a magnetic core. The armature of a motor may be similarly made or a squirrel cage rotor can be formed from an alumina cylinder with a central shaft, the squirrel cage being made of rods and rings of molybdenum disilicide. A variable high-frequency transformer (Fig. 8) comprises an inner cylinder 33 of alumina, in which is embedded a helical conductor 34 of molybdenum disilicide, and an outer cylinder 36 with a winding 37. The coupling between the windings is varied by relative movement of the cylinders. Tappings 38 may be brazed to the windings. Specification 779,128, [Group II], is referred to.
