Abstract
Cyclohexane is recovered from a fraction containing at least 70 per cent and not more than 88 per cent by volume of cyclohexane in admixture with non-naphthenic hydrocarbons, by chilling the fraction to a temperature between - 10 DEG and - 100 DEG F. to form a slurry of cyclohexane crystals in a mother liquor, and <PICT:0800983/IV (b)/1> separating the crystals from the slurry. An hydrocarbon fraction consisting of cyclohexane in admixture with non-naphthenic hydrocarbons including dimethyl pentanes, is fed by a line 11 to a fractionating column 12, where a first fraction comprising an azeotrope of cyclohexane and dimethyl pentanes is discarded as overhead fraction by line 35, and a second fraction containing between 70 and 88 per cent by volume of cyclohexane is passed by a line 14 to a chiller 15. The fraction in chiller 15 is cooled indirectly or by addition of a refrigerant such as carbon dioxide or propane, to form a slurry at a temperature between - 10 DEG and - 100 DEG F., which is passed by lines 17 and 18 to a cooled holding tank 20 where the crystals are allowed to grow, the slurry then passing by a line 25 to a cooled centrifuge 26. If desired, the slurry may by-pass the tank 20, and pass by lines 17 and 25 to the centrifuge 26. Cyclohexane crystals are separated in the centrifuge 26 and removed by a line 31, and mother liquor withdrawn by a line 30 is either recycled to line 11 or removed by line 32. The centrifuge 26 may be replaced by a filter.
