Abstract

800,578. Making containers; jointing by stamping. KURZ, K. Aug. 30, 1955, No. 24923/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XVII] A method of making cylindrical containers, the walls 7 of which are of fibre but which may be protected by metal end casings 2, comprises the use of dies 6 movable towards each other in the direction of a counter-mould 7 to form a circumferential indentation or groove 5 in the drum, near its bottom edge, and the use of an axially acting die 8 for exerting axial pressure on the rim of the drum while the indentation or groove 5 is being formed. The indentation 5 may be initially pre-pressed with the use of a first countermould and a second counter-mould 7 may then be used for the final pressing of the groove, an end disc 3 being gripped between the indentation 5 and a beaded edge 9 formed by the die 8. In a modification the bottom disc 3 may itself constitute a counter-mould. The disc 3 may be grooved near its outer edge and the end of the cylindrical casing may be beaded into this groove. The ends 3 may be of tin, plywood, or laminated glued paper.
