Abstract

800,346. Valves. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. April 12, 1956 [April 22, 1955], No. 11675/55. Class 135. The upper end of a glass tube 4 is connected to a spherical glass reservoir containing nitro-cellulose dissolved in butyl acetate with butyl phthalate as plasticizer. The lower end of the tube 4 tapers towards its outlet and is provided with a capillary bore above which is a valve comprising a glass seat 6 and a closure member 7 consisting of a glass capsule 7 slidable in the tube and containing iron filings and formed externally at the lower end with three pips 10 that keep the capsule aligned in the tube 4; the capsule may be of magnetic material. Depending from the capsule 7 is a glass rod 12 that is coaxial with a further glass rod 13 upstanding from a glass ridge 14 in the tube, the ridge incorporating apertures 15<1>; a glass spring 16 interconnects both rods. Externally of the tube is located a solenoid 19, as shown, or a movable permanent magnet. In use the outlet end of the tube is inserted into a cathode-ray tube so as to nearly touch the centre of the surface of a layer of distilled water covering the fluorescent screen, the tube 4 is filled with film-forming liquid from the reservoir and the solenoid 19 is connected to a D.C. supply whereupon the iron filings are attracted and move the capsule 7 away from its seat 6, thus compressing the spring 16 and allowing liquid from the reservoir to flow on to the screen via the seat 6, around the sides of the capsule 7 and through the apertures 15<1>. The solenoid 19 is de-energized, when sufficient liquid has been deposited on to the water, the spring 16 then seating the capsule. The apparatus may be used wherever it is desired to intermittently feed a liquid under gravity at a uniform rate of flow.
