Abstract

799,939. Taping head. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S (SUBMARINE CABLES), Ltd. Aug. 27, 1956 [Aug. 25, 1955], No. 24505/55. Class 109. In a taping head of the kind in which a coil of paper or other tape is mounted on a central hub and held between a pair of discs one of which is detachable, the hub is rotatably mounted on a spindle and carries a pair of flange-like rings, three or more pins project from one ring into corresponding. spaced apertures in the other ring, one of the rings is fixed to the hub and the other is movably supported on a cylindrical surface on a nut in screwthreaded engagement with the hub, an interrupted circumferential rib on the periphery of the nut is provided with inclined cam surfaces, to engage circumferential interrupted surfaces on that ring, and the arcuate lengths of the cam surfaces and of the interrupted surfaces on the ring are such as to permit the nut to be moved, by rotation of the nut through a part of a revolution, between a position in which the movable ring can be moved axially over the nut and a position in which the ring is held in position by the nut. Two embodiments are shown. The first, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a hollow hub 1 rotatably supported on a spindle 12 by means of ball races 3, 3. The hub carries a flange 12 to which a disc 13 is secured. Three pins 15, 120 degrees apart, project from the flange 12 through apertures in a ring 16 to which is fixed a disc 18, a coil 19 of tape being held between the discs 13, 18. The ring 16 is supported on a cylindrical surface of a nut 20 which works on a screw thread of the hub. A circumferential rib on the periphery of the nut 20 is interrupted to form three cams 21, which each has an inclined cam surface 23, Fig. 3. The ring has three corresponding cut-away portions so that when the portions and the cams are in alignment the ring 16 can be withdrawn axially. Between each cut-away portion and the next is a bowed leaf spring 24 which is arranged to be engaged by a cam 21 when the nut 20 is rotated. A releasable locking device is provided in the form of a pawl 26 which engages one of the pins 15. In the second embodiment, Fig. 6, three locating pins 131 are fixed to a ring 32 which carries the detachable disc 35, these pins being adapted to enter holes 34 in the assembly for the fixed disc 35. Locking pins 38 are fixed to the outer side of the ring 32 and are engaged by a pawl similar to that of the first embodiment. The cam surfaces of the nut 39 have leading and trailing surfaces, not shown in Fig. 6.
