Abstract

A coating composition comprises a polymer or copolymer of an alkenyl ester of a 3,4-epoxycyclohexane carboxylic acid (see Group IV (a)), a solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone, xylene or toluene, and a pigment such as titanium dioxide, with or without a curing agent such as a polybasic organic or inorganic acid. The composition may be applied to surface of e.g. steel panels by dipping or spraying and heated to effect cross-linking.ALSO:Alkenyl esters of 3,4-epoxycyclohexane carboxylic acids may be polymerized alone or with a polymerizable monomeric material such as vinyl chloride, bromide, fluoride, acetate, butyrate, chloracetate, formate or caproate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride or fluoride, methyl acrylate or methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl - 1,3 - butadiene, 1 - acetoxybutadiene, piperylene, 2-cyano-1,3-butadiene, 2-methoxy - 1,3 - butadiene, 2 - fluoro - 1,3-butadiene, acetylene or an acetylene derivative containing an acetylenic linkage, divinyl, diallyl or dimethallyl oxalate, maleate, malonate, citrate, tartrate, phthalate, isophthalate, terephthalate or naphthalene dicarboxylate, a vinyl, allyl or methallyl diether of ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, glycerol, mannitol or sorbitol, an acrylic or methacrylic polyester of ethylene glycol or vinyl triethoxy silane. Alkenyl esters specified are vinyl and allyl 3,4-epoxycyclohexane carboxylate and 3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexane carboxylate. Polymerization may be effected in solution, emulsion, suspension or bulk, in the presence of a catalyst such as acetyl, benzoyl, lauroyl or benzoyl acetyl peroxide, tertiary-butyl or cumene hydroperoxide, tertiary-butyl perbenzoate or peracetate, potassium persulphate or azo bisisobutyronitrile. In solution polymerization the solvent may be acetone, tetrahydrofuran, dimethylformamide or benzene; in emulsion polymerization the emulsifying agent may be dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate or sodium tetradecyl sulphate; in suspension polymerization the suspension agent may be hydroxy-ethyl cellulose. The polymers may be used for the production of floor coverings, wire coatings, plastic pipe, upholstery, raincoats, surface coatings and films. When producing a surface coating the polymer is dissolved in a solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone, xylene or toluene with or without a curing agent such as a polybasic organic or inorganic acid and a pigment such as titanium dioxide, applied to the surface e.g. by dipping or spraying, and cross-linked by heating.
