Containers 30 (Fig. 1) can be carried on rail wagons as illustrated or on road vehicles and have wheels of the same gauge as the railway wagons. As illustrated, the containers 30 are lifted from the rail vehicles 10 as the latter enter a sunken bay Bl by rollers 54 mounted in the walls of the bay and engaging under the bodies of the containers to convey them to a rail F. Ramp rails (not shown) may engage the wagons to ensure their separation from the containers. The containers are normally located on their road or rail carrier vehicles by interengaging V-section members 13, 14 and are locked by bolts which may be released manually or alternatively may be released by members which engage fixed cam tracks 21 in the bays. When the containers 30 are to be drawn on to vehicles they are connected by couplings such as those shown or by a coupling to the road vehicle on which they are to be loaded. The Specification illustrates a lay-out of tracks for the containers and the rail wagons, including a portion of underground track for the wagons and showing loading bays where the containers are transferred to and from road vehicles. Guide rails may assist in guiding the road vehicles for carrying the containers into a bay where they are loaded or unloaded in a manner similar to that illustrated in connection with railway wagons in Fig. 1.
