Class 59 A pulverizing machine comprises a chamber 20 having a co-axial air inlet 25, a co-axial outlet 47 and a material feed inlet 53, and rotary pulverizer 16 adjacent the inlet 25 and including pivotallyattached hammers surrounded by serrated walls 22, and a rotary separator 48 adjacent the outlet 47, the pulverizer being mounted on a shaft 26 driven from a motor 12 and the separator being mounted on a shaft 50 driven at variable speed from a motor 57. The outlet 47 leads to an outlet pipe 52 to which a source of suction is applied. A slot 64 for admitting air is provided around the upper edge of the chamber 20 so as to prevent the accumulation of pulverized material. The pulverizer comprises spaced rows of hammers 30, 31, 32 pivotally attached to discs 27, 27a and having hardened tips 43, the hammers 30, 31 having downwardly-bevelled surfaces 44 and the hammers 31 being staggered circumferentially relatively to the hammers 30, 32. Fan blades may be attached to the underside of the disc 27a. The shaft 50 of the separator 48 is driven from the motor 57 through a belt and pulley drive 51, 55, 56. The position of the motor 57, which is attached to a plate 62 hinged to a fixed bracket 58, is adjustable to adjust the tension of the belt 55, by means of a handwheel 59 turning a screwthreaded shaft 60. The pulley 56 has a variable pitch sidewall arrangement which has a spring bias for causing the flanges of the pulley to move axially close together. The diameter of the pulley 56 upon which the belt 55 will ride is determined by the tension on the belt as adjusted by the handwheel 59 and screw-threaded shaft 60.
