799,577. Disc brakes. HILGER, O., and BUSCH, W., [trading as BERGISCHE STAHLINDUSTRIE]. Nov. 29, 1954 [Nov. 28, 1953], No. 34534/54, Class 103 (1). In a " spot-type " disc brake having a hollow brake disc la, provided with curved cooling ribs 3 or straight ribs 3a, and capable axial sliding movement on guide cylinder 30 rotatable with the wheel of a vehicle, kidney - shaped pressure plates 38, 38a, provided with friction pads 4, are arranged on the right-hand and lefthand sides respectively of the brake disc and are located on two hollow studs 40 in a rigid caliper housing 39 such that pressure plate 38 is held rigidly with caliper housing 39 and pressure plate 38a is adapted for axial movement to urge its associated friction pad 4 into frictional contact with the left-hand side of brake disc 1a, thereby urging the disc into frictional contact with fixed pressure plate 38. The brake may be applied by fluid pressure supplied through conduit 43 to actuate a piston 69 against the action of a return spring 65 to move associated slotted ring 72 in a clockwise direction to cause setting ring 75 to engage ratchet teeth on setting ring 78 to rotate tapped sleeve 49 on a coarsethreaded pressure spindle 52 and produce the necessary brake pressure. Automatic adjustment for friction pad wear is provided by a detent 59 mounted in caliper housing 39 and yieldingly pressed into engagement with ratchet teeth provided on adjusting sleeve 49. The brake may alternatively be applied by manual operation by rotation of lever 81, associated with slotted ring 72, in a clockwise direction; similar provision being made for automatic adjustment for wear. A steady stream of compressed air is supplied through feed pipes 42, passing through hollow studs 40 and holes in friction pads 4 into the space between the linings and the braking surfaces of the disc 1a to form an air cushion therebetween when the braking pressure is released and remove dust from the braking surfaces to prevent excessive wear of the friction pads 4 and brake disc 1a.
