Abstract
799,285. Barrels; taphole bushes. LLOYD, M. G. July 31, 1956 [Aug. 23, 1955], No. 23639/56. Classes 21 and 66. A metal container for liquids comprises an inner vessel 1 of a stainless steel or other corrosionresistant metal, and an outer protective casing 5 formed from two or more sections detachably secured together to fully encase the inner vessel 1, the outer casing 5 being in contact with an exerting pressure on the ends of the inner vessel 1 so as to restrain it against endwise movement. The outer casing 5 may be of mild steel and may be galvanised. The outer surface of the inner vessel may be similarly treated. As shown, the outer casing 5 comprises an upper and a lower section both marked 6, and an intermediate section 7, all three sections having out-turned annular flanges 9. Each pair of mating flanges 9 is sandwiched between channel-sectioned mild steel rings 10 the rings being united by a series of bolts 11 extending through one ring and screwing into anchor blocks 12 in the channel of the other ring. A sealing gasket or a sealing compound may be inserted between the mating flanges 9. The sections 6, 7, 6 are corrugated as shown to permit these sections to be more readily stressed into a state of tension when clamped together around the inner vessel 1. Shock absorbing and/or heat insulating material may be provided between the outer casing 5 and the inner vessel 1 where they are not in contact. The side wall portions of the sections 6 contact the side wall 1a of the vessel 1 near the ends of the latter, thereby holding the vessel 1 centrally within the casing 5. The end walls 6a of the sections 6 are inset to form end rims 6b on which the barrel stands when upright, and are so shaped as to provide annular seating surfaces 6c which bear on the end walls 1b of the vessel 1 thereby restraining endwise movement of the vessel 1. Taphole bushes. An internally threaded member 15, Fig. 3, is flush-welded in a hole 2 in the side of the vessel 1. A ring nut 16, screwed into the member 15, cause the casing 5 to be compressed between sealing washers 17 and 17a on the member 15. A metal bung plug 19, screwed into the nut 16, compresses a resilient sealing washer 20 against a shoulder 18 formed inside the nut 16. When a wooden shive is used in place of the screwed bung plug 19, the shock of hammering the shive into the bore will largely be absorbed by the section 7 of the casing 5. Fig. 4 illustrates the tap hole bush at the upper end of the barrel. The part 23 is welded to the inner vessel 1b and is surrounded by a ring nut 24 compressing a resilient sealing washer 25 against the outer casing 6a. A bush 26 is screwed into the part 23 the bush 26 being internally threaded for the reception of extraction gear of a usual kind but not shown. At other times the bush 26 is stopped by a cork extending into a smooth portion 23b of the bore in the part 23.
