Abstract
A fluid for application to the coacting parts in metal working and cutting processes (see Group XXII) comprises an aqueous solution of a metallic chloride, bromide or iodide with a halide concentration greater than 0.03 gm. ion per litre, together with one or more corrosion-inhibiting substances in sufficient quantity to render the fluid substantially non-corrosive. The halides may be those of the alkali or alkaline earth metals Be, Mg, Zn, Cd, Al, Ci, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni, and are preferably present in a halide concentration of 0.1 to 1 gm. ion per litre. Corrosion inhibitors mentioned are Na2HPO4, Na2CO3, NaNO2, NaH2PO4, Na3PO4, KNO2, KCrO4, K2Cr2O7 and CH3COONa with borax or triethanolamine as a buffering agent. In an example the effect of adding 1/2 per cent wt. NaCl to a prior art composition comprising an aqueous solution of sodium acetate, sodium nitrite and triethanolamine is described. Other examples compare the effectiveness of sodium, potassium, calciu, barium and ferric chlorides and of sodium chloride, bromide and iodide. According to the Provisional Specification the following substances may also be used as corrosion inhibitors: ammonium nitrite and amine nitrites such as dicyclohexylammonium nitrite; alkali metal, ammonium and amine chromates, stannates, phosphates and benzoates; sodium or potassium arsenite; sodium bicarbonates and silicates; and octodecylamine.
