In the embodiment of apparatus for detecting contamination of a transparent vessel, a suitable device 1 causes the inner surface of the bottom of jar 3 to be scanned by a light-spot. Lighttight enclosure 4 includes photo-cells 9, 10, 12, 13 and high-reflectance areas 5, 8. If the jar base is opaquely contaminated the resulting reduction of current passed by photo-cells 9, 10 may be used to produce an indication or action not described. With a glass splinter in the base light will be refracted to fall on area 5 and one or both of photo-cells 12, 13 will give increased current to produce a desired operation or indication.
