Abstract

798,615. Dispensing paper cups; vending apparatus. AMERICAN CAN CO. Aug. 29, 1956 [Sept. 1, 1955], No. 26426/56. Classes 27 and 116 [Also in Group XXX] A container dispenser which may be coin freed has dispensing elements 9 mounted on a support 1 and arranged to feed containers e.g. paper cups through an aperture 7 in the support, the elements being adjustable in position to deal with containers of different sizes. A magazine 6 containing a stack of rim-beaded paper cups 8 is mounted on a plate 1 over the aperture 7 about which is positioned a set of rotary dispensing worms 9, each having an upper journal 10 and a lower journal 11 above which is an integral pinion 12. Each worm has a flat top face and a knife-edge 14 at the starting-point, and a groove 15 ending in a flat projecting land 16 having a curved outer edge. A driving motor 4 has an upstanding shaft 18 journalled in the plates 1 and 2, provided with a pinion 19 meshing with an idler gear 20 carried on a shaft having a journal pin 22 at each end for engagement in apertures in the plates 1 and 2. The gear 20 drives a ring gear 23 which has a hollow portion 24 depending through an aperture 25 in the plate 2 and meshes with the pinion 12 on each of the dispensing worms 9, thus driving them in unison. The first operation causes the knife-edges 14 to engage the lowermost cup above the rim-bead, place the bead in the grooves 15 and transfer the cup downwards during a single revolution until its rim bead rests on the flat lands 16. The next cup in the stack is maintained above by the flat tops 13 until the succeeding operation, when the first cup is discharged after the worms have turned 15 to 20 degrees, the next cup being lowered on to the lands 16. In order to accommodate paper cups' of different sizes, there are alternative sets of apertures 28 and 29 for the dispensing worms and 31 and 32 for the drive gears; larger ring gears are provided for use when these are employed.
