Abstract
798,508. Counting-apparatus. HOBSON, Ltd., H. M., FELLOWS, H., and HEAD, R. E. A. June 27, 1956 [Dec. 28, 1955], No. 37135/55. Class 106 (1). [Also in Group XXXVIII] A frequency-dividing circuit; particularly for a flowmeter, comprises a chain of electronic frequency dividers to which pulses are fed through a gate opened during alternate half cycles only of an oscillator having a variable mark/space ratio. The flowmeter may, as described in Specification 752,496, comprise a transmitter 21, 22 which produces pulses at a rate equal to the rate of volumetric flow of a liquid in a pipe 10, an amplifier 23, a shaper 24, binary dividers 26<SP>1</SP>-26<SP>4</SP> and an amplifier 27 driving a counter 28. In the present arrangement, the mark/space ratio of the oscillator 29 is varied manually or automatically (as described in Specification 788,798), [Group XXVIII], in accordance with the density of the liquid so that the counter 28 registers the mass-flow. A rate-meter 38, 39, such as that described in Specification 798,507, [Group XXXVIII], may be connected to the output of the first divider so as to register the rate of mass-flow. The oscillator 29 is a multivibrator, and the mark/space ratio is varied by a potentiometer arrangement 15 varying oppositely the grid potentials of the valves V1, V2. The anode of V2 is connected through a cathode follower 30 to the cathode of a triode gate 25. During the mark semi-periods, the cathode follower is cut off and the grid of the gate 25 is held slightly below cut-off so that input pulses, which, after shaping by a monostable flip-flop 24, are applied positively to the grid of the gate 25, cause conduction in the gate and negative output pulses at the anode. During the space semi-periods with the cathode follower conducting, the gate remains unconducting even on receipt of an input pulse.
