Abstract

798,431. Copy-milling turbine-blades. CREEK, J. O., and DAWSON, E. W. Feb. 1, 1957 [Feb. 6, 1956], No. 3612/57. Class 83 (3). A milling-machine comprises means for resiliently biasing a pattern 41 and a work-holder 43 towards a spindle 22 carrying a coaxial follower 42 and cutter 23, and means 36 for continuously reciprocating them axially of the spindle. The spindle 22 also carries a fly-wheel 24 and the spindle-head 21 is vertically adjustable. Limiting depth of cut. A transversely-adjustable table 13 carries two blocks 16, 17 supporting slides 26, 27 biased by springs towards the cutter 22, the movement being limited by adjustable stops 33 on end-plates 31. The slides 26, 27 carry cross-slides 40, each mounting a pattern 41 and a blade blank 44. Lubricating machines. Each slide also carries a motor 36 rotating an eccentric which, through a sliding-block and lever-system, having lubricating-channels therein, reciprocates the pattern and blade. Cooling tools and work. A pipe 65 supported on the slide 21 supplies coolant to the cutter. Catching cuttings. A shield 66 is moved to expose one blade or the other, by a stop 71 engaging pins 72, 73 on the shield. Movement of the shield to either position operates microswitches 69, 70 controlling the motors 36. Operation. A blade is advanced to the cutter and is reciprocated while the cutter is fed vertically. The blade has its convex-surface machined on the block 17 and is then transferred to the block 16 for its concave-surface to be machined. Milling cutters. The cutter is shaped as shown in Fig. 3 so that it machines the rootsurface 44a, the fillet-radius 44b and the " runout " 44c.
