Abstract

797,882. Linkwork. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. July 5, 1956 [May 26, 1955], No. 15294/55. Class 80 (3). A manipulating device for handling articles by remote control, particularly articles in a space containing a substance, such as liquid sodium, at high temperature, comprises a normally flexible girder 11, formed of a pair of spaced flexible strips 14, 15 and series of interconnecting links 20, 22, 23, passing through a rigid rectangular guide casing 10 having vertical and horizontal straight portions 10a, 10b and on connecting curved portion 10c. Pairs of the links 20 are pivoted to lugs 16 spaced along the strip 14 and each link is pivotally connected to the link of the adjacent pair. The links 22, 23 are coupled together and bridge the connecting points between the links 20 of adjacent pairs to allow opening and closing movements of the links 20 as they pass around the guide casing 10. The trip 15 carries a series of abutment blocks 27 which have shaped faces adapted to engage between an abutment face 26 on one link 22 and shoulders on the end of the adjacent link to lock the links rigid when they are in and beyond the horizontal straight portion 10b of the guide casing. In the curved part of the guide casing which is made of greater depth the flexible strip 15 with the blocks 27 moves away from the strip 14 so that the locking between the links is released to allow flexing of the girder 11 around the curved casing. In the vertical straight portion 10a of the casing the block 27 assumes a position clear of the locking faces of the links 22. Thus the flexible girder can be passed freely through the guide casing 10 by any suitable actuating means to project out rigidly from the horizontal portion 10b a desired extent. A bracket 19 is connected across the strip 14, 15 at their extremity to support an article gripping device 12 such as described in Specification 797,881, [Group XXX], and a flexible shroud 13 encloses the whole girder and guide casing structure. The casing 10 is supported so that it can be moved vertically and rotated about the axis of the vertical portion so that the gripping device 12 can be moved as desired.
