[Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXVIII] A Mach number meter consists of apparatus which produces a signal the nature of which varies according to the Mach number of the aircraft, apparatus for producing a similar signal the quality of which varies in a similar manner to the above according to the setting of a pointer on a scale, and means for comparing these two signals. The difference between the signals may be used either to cause a servomotor to alter the setting of the pointer on the said scale until the scale reading coincides with the Mach number of the aircraft or to cause an alteration in the said Mach number of the aircraft until it coincides with the scale reading. A height unit 1 measures the static pressure and drives the variable contact 5 of potentiometer 3 by means of a servo mechanism 14 and an air-speed unit 2 measures the difference between dynamic and static pressure and uses the difference to drive variable contact 6 of the potentiometer 4 by means of servo 15. The resultant signal which is fed into resistor 9 is proportional to the difference between dynamic and static pressure divided by the static pressure. Similarly the signal which is fed into resistor 10 is a function of the position of the pointer 23. Resistances 7, 18 and 19 and their cross-tappings are so arranged that this latter function of position of the pointer is very similar to the function of the Mach number which yields the expression :- " difference between dynamic and static pressure divided by static pressure." Reference is made to modifications using inductive potential dividers, non-linear variation of the potential dividers 21, 22, and a non-linear scale at 8.
