Abstract

Acicular iron particles are made by heating acicular iron oxide to a temperature between 500 DEG C. and the temperature at which acicularity is destroyed, reducing the oxide with a reducing agent selected from the alkali metals and alkali metal hydrides at a temperature below 300 DEG C. and recovering the acicular iron particles. The reaction may be carried out in a molten inorganic reaction medium, e.g. a mixture of alkali hydroxides or alkali hydroxides and alkali halides, and after reduction of the oxide the iron may be recovered by dissolving the medium in water. The heat treatment of the oxide may comprise heating at 750-900 DEG C. for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. The iron particles are stated to be 1-1.5 microus in length.
