Vitreous enamelled plates, e.g., for wall facings or table tops, have a smooth vitreous enamel coating on their front face and an absorbent vitreous coating on their back face for penetration by the adhesive used for bonding the plate to the backing. The absorbent may be formed by adding a powdered refractory (e.g., sintered clay) or an effervescing agent (e.g., a mineral carbonate) to the enamel.
